What First Turned You Against the State?

That is a powerful story, many of us here fear the conditions you describe. The fact is that it could happen here and that scares me, because I know how i will react, I will fight and most likely loo…

What First Turned You Against the State?

After 8 years of the Dems then 8 years of the Republicans making 16 years of monster government I knew something was very wrong. I then started to think of my personal experiences with the state, alw…

"I agree that it was just too long. I think she could have easily made her point in under 500 pages." I disagree. The Godfather wouldn't work in 90 minutes, Lord of the Rings couldn't be cut in half, The Bible would lose a lot of its message withou…

I agree Ree, I mean how many adjectives can be in one book, does anyone know what decade she was writing about, I am thinking 30's but not sure if the book says. I wonder if FDR motivated her to write it, the "new deal". When I was in college I wrot…

That's great Lounge Daddy, did she feel like she had made a mistake supporting Obama?

I read Atlas Shrugged over the summer. It literally took me all summer. I think I started in June and finished at the end of August. I agree that it was just too long. I think she could have easily made her point in under 500 pages.

Oh, Snap. I don't have that one. I like Hazel, so I'll have to find a nice used copy online somewhere. I need to dive back into that series for another go-round. But I'm knee deep in the Ender's Shadow series at the moment. I guess I better wiki the…

I like it all, stillbjorn. I guess my very favorite in that time line is "The Rolling Stones" - one of his juveniles set after the prisoners revolt on Luna when Hazel is going out to the asteroids with her children and grandchildren.

The first time I read it, I suffered through that entire speech. The last two times I've read it I just skipped right over it. Which is your favorite of the Lazarus Long stuff, Jim? I'm partial to "To Sail Beyond The Sunset."

I am almost done with the book. I need a year break before I read another book that long, but I do think the John Galt speech should be given on the floor of congress.

Well, yeah, but having the long-winded character Polonius say those words in one of Shakespeare's longer plays is meant to be irony. Or maybe irony's older brother, sardonicism.

I read the book and enjoyed it, but the speech I had to skim over after the first 15 pages or so. in the words of Shakespeare "Brevity is the soul of wit"

Don't say that! Use of the word "god" in connection with Ayn Rand's works will get you hounded for mysticism by the objectivist league. They can be very mean. Barbara Branden once told me (at a cocktail party in London, Ontario, after she sold hers…

This is the longest book I have ever read. I like the book, but my god it is too long.

This is John Galt

"Ladies and gentlemen," said a voice that came from the radio receiver–a man's clear, calm, implacable voice, the kind of voice that had not been heard on the airwaves for years–"Mr. Thompson will not speak to you tonight. His time is up. I have taken it over. You were to hear a report on the world crisis. That is what you are going to hear."
Three gasps of recognition greeted the voice, but nobody had the power to notice them among the sounds of the crowd, which were beyond the stage of cries.… Continue

Stop using google and gmail

I was listening to the radio yesterday when a lady who was a privacy advocate was on, she was saying that using google and gmail are bad because the state and google often work together and they frequently monitor your gmail email. I have been using gmail for years, what email service would you recommend?

I am listening to a audio book from a book club here on the site, but I can't find the post. Anyone have the link? I must be getting old.
