FR33 Agents

the freedom activist network

I was listening to the radio yesterday when a lady who was a privacy advocate was on, she was saying that using google and gmail are bad because the state and google often work together and they frequently monitor your gmail email. I have been using gmail for years, what email service would you recommend?

You could use a disposable e-mail account.

Sorry everybody been busy all day. I don't remember the show or the lady's name, I do remember she wrote books on the subject and called herself a privacy advocate I believe. I don't do anything wrong to worry about this stuff, but it freaks me out how they are using technology to spy on us. I will have to look into pgp as I don't know what that is just yet. Tomorrow when I get some time, I will look into it. Thanks guys for the info.

Try Hushmail for secure email, but for more security, you may wish to mask your IP. This article explains click here.

Which radio show & host had this guest on?

Knowing that it was a woman and a privacy advocate, I'm going to guess Katherine Albrecht. How'd I do?

"If you're really hardcore, you can cultivate an entirely fictitious "internet person," complete with facebook profile and friends who are utterly convinced you went to their high school. Human memory is a wonderful thing."
I've always wanted to do that :) I don't know how I'd pull it off though.

Ditto -- encryption is your friend. If you're doing something really naughty, use Tor and accounts under a false name.

Mike-
Google is no more likely to be playing buddy buddy with the state than any other e-mail provider. Which radio show & host had this guest on?
If you are looking for someone what improved privacy I recommend using gmail with GPG, & an IMAP Client as FireGPG is unreliable, Forcing SSL, and using a really strong password, try a password manager (keepass X). You can also combine your encryption with things like steganography.

None of these things will be 100% effective, as there are MANY obsticles to privacy (everything from Malware, to bad passwords, to hardware based attacks, etc.) If "they" are after you specifically, they will find a way in.
